The Fazio Course

Designed by Tom Fazio

Live oaks, longleaf pines, lakes and wetlands on a par 71 that never returns to the clubhouse at the turn. Tree lined fairways, elevation changes and steep faced bunkers put a premium on accuracy. Widely regarded as the prettiest of the four.

Signature holes

Where the Fazio Course makes its name

  1. A water hazard with trees and a fairway in the background
    2

    The hardest hole

    Par 4 · 458 yards · Handicap 1

The number one handicap hole arrives early. A 458 yard par 4 from the back that asks for a long, straight drive between the trees and a precise approach.

  2. A lakeside green on a Barefoot Resort course
    13

    The two green hole

    Par 4 · 374 yards · Handicap 2

The hole most golfers talk about afterwards. A par 4 with two greens, one of them fronted by a lake, so which flag is in play on the day decides how the hole is attacked.

  3. The sixteenth hole on the Fazio Course with a lake along the fairway
    16

The par 3 on the lake

    Par 3 · 196 yards · Handicap 18

The hole pictured on this page. The longest of the five par 3s plays beside the water to a green set against the trees.

  4. A sunlit fairway with sand traps and homes along the tree line
    18

    A tight finish

    Par 4 · 453 yards · Handicap 12

From the back tees the closing par 4 starts with a drive over wetlands and through a chute of trees, 453 yards to a green below the clubhouse. The hole in the photograph at the top of this page.

The design

What Tom Fazio built here

Tom Fazio was handed the ground between the Dye and Love courses and used it to build the most natural looking of the four. The holes wind through towering live oaks and longleaf pines, past lakes and native wetlands, and the elevation changes are real, which is unusual on the Grand Strand.

  • No return at the turnA continuous eighteen that leaves the clubhouse at the first and comes home at the last, the only one of the four Barefoot courses laid out that way.
  • Lowcountry settingLive oaks, longleaf pines, native grasses, wetlands and lakes. The course that looks most like the South Carolina coast it sits on.
  • Steep faced bunkersFazio’s fairway and greenside bunkers are deep, with high faces that make recovery a genuine penalty. Accuracy matters more than distance.

Fazio Course questions

Why is the Fazio Course a par 71?

It has five par 3s and three par 5s rather than the usual four and four. The front nine is a par 35 and the back a par 36.

Does the Fazio Course return to the clubhouse at the turn?

No. It is laid out as one continuous eighteen in the European style, so plan a drink and a snack from the beverage cart rather than a stop at the clubhouse after nine.

Is the Fazio Course hard?

It is the shortest of the four from the back tees but carries a slope of 144, because the bunkering and the tree lines punish a crooked drive. Play it for position and it is very fair.

Can I book the Fazio Course with my villa?

Yes. Use the booking box on this page with the Stay + Play tab, or call (866) 238-1035, and your rounds are priced and confirmed with your rental.
